The soundscape heard here is an excursion into the artist’s idyllic childhood memories, when Taipei was not yet a big city and was still full of birds. When he was a young boy, the many sparrows in the trees and on the telephone wires along his way to school in Taipei were a common sight for Hsiao Sheng-Chien. But as the city’s modernization progressed, not only did the telephone wires disappear, but the sparrows became fewer and fewer as well. In the installation Return, they return for a moment—the sparrows from the artist’s childhood.
