In the 1990s, Kendell Geers took photographs of the affluent suburbs of Johannesburg during the final years of apartheid in South Africa. The focus of Suburbia is on the security signs affixed to the walls of gated communities, residential areas that are completely walled off or otherwise separated from public space, symbolizing the bogus promise that fences and walls can be used to solve sociopolitical issues.
