In her video installation The Onion, performance artist Marina Abramović laments all the things she is “tired of.” All the while, she devours an unpeeled, raw onion. Bite by bite, she visibly finds it harder and harder to continue eating, her eyes watering, her makeup smudged. But the onion acts as the “fruit of knowledge” and brings about a catharsis: Physical pain and a borderline mental experience bring purification and new insights.
